After examining the 1st Bataan Death March Ultramarathon 102 last April 5, 2010, especially on the issue of cheating, the race director, M/Gen Jovie Narcise (ret) aka BaldRunner come up with totally different rules and regulation to be applied in the 2nd Bataan Death March Ultramarathon which will be held on March 6-7, 2009. According to him, the rules and regulation will follow the Badwater Ultramarathon Races Rules. I’m pretty sure that this race rules will be contextualize to our situation in the Philippines. I hope BaldRunner will come up with the race rules anytime soon.

To give you the idea of the rules, below is the race rules I copy from Badwater website.

Badwater Ultramarathon Race Rules

General Race Rules

There are three starting times for the 2009 Badwater Ultramarathon (6am, 8am, and 10am on July 13, 2009), but all racers in all groups are competing in the same race. Runners may attend only their assigned start time. Runners must check in at the start line, ready to race, 30 minutes prior to their start time. Starting Groups are assigned by the race director and are non-transferable. Split times will be collated throughout the race to maintain overall standings. There are only two divisions: men’s and women’s. The racer to arrive at the finish line in each division with the lowest overall time, based on their starting time, will be considered the winner.

The race number must be worn on the front of the body, unmodified, unfolded, and visible at all times during the race. It may not be worn on the head or hat.

The clock does not stop for any reason until the race course officially closes 60 hours after each designated official start time. All racers must leave the course by the 60th hour.

Running must always be single file, on the far left side of the road or off the left side of the road, facing traffic (pacers, too).

Racers must make their presence known at all Time Stations located along the route. Runner arrival times at Time Station will be recorded.

The race ends at the Mt. Whitney Portals. If you choose to hike to the summit, please remove any official race logos and be sure to have the appropriate permits from the Forest Service.

Racers, crew, and staff must not litter, mar, or pollute the landscape or environment.

All racers, crew and staff must display courtesy, good taste, decorum, and sportsmanship at all times. Nudity is specifically not allowed.

Legal and Bureaucratic Issues

All racers must follow and complete the entire application and entry process, filling out all forms and paying all necessary fees.

All racers must sign the Entrant Contract.

All racers and all crew members must sign the Accident Waiver and Release of Liability / Release of Name and Likeness. Each entrant must also bring the properly completed Check-In Form and Medical History Form to Runner Check-In.

All race vehicles must meet the minimum requirements of property damage and personal injury liability automobile insurance for the state of California. All vehicle drivers must be fully licensed.

All racers and at least one crew member for each entrant must attend Racer Check-In and all of the Pre-Race Meeting. Those racers who do not complete the scheduled check-in and attend the meeting will not be allowed to participate. No exceptions.

All racers must be willing to submit to a drug urine test before, during, or after the race. If any USOC banned substances are detected, the racer will be disqualified from competition and listed as DISQUALIFIED FOR DOPING in the final standings of the race.

No TV, film, or video crew, person, producer, director or other broadcast media representative may accompany or cover any racer or the race itself without the specific written permission of the Race Director. All film crews must sign a Non-Exclusive Licensing Agreement and pay a Rights Fee. Additionally, Death Valley National Park and/or the U.S. Forest Service may also require payment of a filming fee and signature of a filming agreement.

All racers and crew must pay the Death Valley National Park Entrance Fee. Proof must be brought to Runner Check-In. Runners will not be allowed to check-in for the race without proof of paying the Park Entrance Fee.

All entrants must bring one U.S. dollar (or more) in a sealed envelope to the Pre-Race Meeting. Please write the runner number on the envelope. This envelope will not be returned and the money will be donated to charity.

Support Crew and Assistance

Each racer must be accompanied by a support crew comprised of at least one four-wheeled motor vehicle and two crew members - both of whom are legally licensed to drive and at least one of whom can speak English – at all times. Each racer must have his or her own personal support crew and vehicle; crew and support vehicles may not be shared, except informally in the spirit of the event, i.e., crews may lend assistance to other racers or crews. Race entrants may have no more than two support vehicles and no more than six crew members in total (including “unofficial” and “family cheering squads”) at the race. This includes at the finish line: no more than six crew and two vehicles.

Runners must progress under their own power without drafting, helping, pushing, supporting, or any other type of physical assistance. Runners may not use walking sticks, ski poles, or the like. So-called “cooling vests” or other types of artificial / technological cooling systems may not be worn or utilized by race entrants while making forward progress on the race course. (Click here for more on this.) Crewmembers may not carry an umbrella or shade cover for a runner.

Runners may not be accompanied by more than one pacer at any given time while making forward progress on the race course. Additional crew members that are handing off supplies to the runner and/or pacer must be off the roadway at all times (i.e. left of the white line on the shoulder).

Runners must not run abreast with other runners or with pacers on the roadway. All running must be single-file on the roadway. If runners or pacers want to run next to one another, they must be OFF the roadway, i.e. left of the white line. Pacers may not run in front of race entrants at any time.

Crew members may not use illegal drugs, stimulants, or dope, as well as alcohol of any kind, during the race or at any official race events or activities.

Runners under the age of 60 may not be accompanied by pacers or moving crew members between Badwater and Furnace Creek.

Wheeled conveyances (other than a motorized support vehicle), including in-line skates, strollers, and bicycles, are prohibited on the course at all times. Likewise for hovercrafts and helicopters. Runners accompanied by any such conveyance will be disqualified.

Support Vehicles

Support vehicles may not be wider than 78″ in width, as stated in the manufacturer specifications. Small Cars, Minivans, and SUVs are recommended. Oversize SUVs, vans, and trucks, or other types of oversize vehicles are strongly discouraged, even as a secondary support vehicle. Motorhomes and RVs are specifically not allowed. Race entrants may have no more than two support vehicles and no more than six crew members in total (including “unofficial” and “family cheering squads”) at the race. This includes at the finish line: no more than six crew and two vehicles.

All support vehicles must have their headlights on whenever the engine is running, 24 hours a day.

All race vehicles must have highly visible signage on the back of the vehicle stating “CAUTION RUNNERS ON ROAD,” as provided by the race organizers at Runner Check-In. Magnetic, reflective, professionally made signs for this purpose can be made to order by your local sign shop instead.

All support vehicles must have their racer’s name and race number easily visible on all four sides. This type of sign can be made, for example, using yellow, white, or pink adhesive shelf paper with at least 6 inch letters. This should be done in advance of coming to Death Valley. Magnetic, reflective, professionally made signs for this purpose can be made to order by your local sign shop.

Vehicle windows may not be blocked or obstructed with any signage, paint, or the like.

Only one support vehicle is allowed for each racer at the Start Line before the race and then between the Start Line and Furnace Creek during the race.

Due to a severe parking shortage at the finish line, no more than two vehicles per runner may be on the Whitney Portals Road and/or parked at or near the finish line.

Vehicles must “leapfrog” the runner at all times. Attempt to make each “leapfrog” at least one mile or more in length. Racers may not be “shadowed” (driving a vehicle at the runner’s speed) and vehicles must not “caravan” (drive together, like a train, at any speed). Driving may never be at the speed of any racer. Driving must be done at the speed of traffic, never slowing down to encourage, talk to, or lend assistance to any racer while moving. All assistance must be provided by pedestrian crew members; handing off of supplies from the vehicle is never allowed.

Vehicles must be parked completely off the road surface whenever they are stopped (with all four tyres right of the white line). Many areas of the route have very little shoulder for parking so care must be taken in choosing stopping places. When stopping/parking, vehicles may not stop on the left side of the road. All stopping/parking must be on the right side of the road, off the roadway.

All vehicles must obey the vehicle code laws of California at all times.

Safety and Medical Issues

Remember, at all times and in all situations, safety is the most important issue. This means safety for racers, crew, staff, and the general public. The roads are not closed for this event and are, in fact, quite busy with tourist and local traffic.

I.V.s (intravenous fluids) are not permitted during the race. If a racer receives an I.V. during the race, for any reason, then that racer is disqualified and must withdraw from the race and the race course.

From 700pm to 600am each day (night) of the event, while outside on the race course, all racers and all crewmembers/pacers must wear reflective material facing in all four directions, as well as blinking red lights facing front and rear. Racers and crewmembers are encouraged to wear reflective material during the day as well. We highly recommend the products from ZombieRunner.com (click “Nighttime Running” in their store.)

Racers are responsible for both their own and their crew’s actions; crews are responsible for both their own and their racer’s actions.

Always look and listen both ways before crossing the highways. Remember that drivers will not expect to encounter a racer or parked vehicle out on the course. Remember we are on public roads. Racers should not cross over the highway more than necessary; crew should cross the highway carefully to bring assistance to their racer.

All entrants and crew must study “Medical Risks in the Badwater Ultramarathon,” “Dangers of Running in the Heat,” and “The Dangers of Hot Weather Running”.

Leaving the Course or Withdrawing

Every inch of the course must be traveled by each racer. In the event of a routing error, e.g., wrong turn, the racer may be driven back to the exact original spot where he/she left the course and continue running from that location. There will be no allowance made for lost time or miles run in the wrong direction.

If a racer needs to leave the course, his/her crew must note the exact location with a numbered stake in the ground. This numbered stake must be visible from the road in both directions. The racer must then resume the race from the same place that he/she left it. The numbered stakes will be provided to all runners at Runner Check-In. Racers may only leave the course for appropriate reasons such as rest or medical attention. Focus must be kept on the speedy completion of the course.

If a racer withdraws, he/she or his/her crew must contact Race Headquarters or a Time Station immediately. Name, reason for withdrawal, time of withdrawal, and miles completed must be stated. All racers and crew who drop are encouraged - and expected – to come to the finish line and both post-race events to greet and celebrate with their fellow racers and crews.

All Emergency Evacuation costs for participants or crews will be borne by that person or their heirs. The race organizers are in no way liable or responsible for emergency evacuation.

Awards

All racers who begin the event will receive a Badwater Ultramarathon race t-shirt, hat, Race Magazine, and a goodie bag. All racers who officially complete the event within 60 hours will receive a finisher’s medal and a finisher’s t-shirt. All racers who officially complete the course within 48 hours will also receive a commemorative Badwater Ultramarathon buckle.

This is my first post about the 2nd Bataan Death March Ultra Marathon 102k. I haven’t seriously train for this event. The load of my class works are overwhelming which drag me away from running as often as I want. I was shocked to see my heart rate from GF305 after Makiling Challenge 12k last Sunday. It showed that the avarage heart rate was 180 bpm and the maximum was 207 bpm. That was so high! My normal heart rate before was avg: 130-145 bpm and max: 175-180 bpm. I hate to admit that I pushed too hard. I forced my self even without proper training and lack of mileage.

It’s time to get back!!!

Below are the information I copy from Baldrunner events about Bataan 102k.

2nd Bataan 102K Ultramarathon Race is limited to only 150 participants to include foreign runners.

Registration Fee For the 2nd Bataan 102K Ultramarathon Race is Two Thousand Pesos (P 2,000) for local runners and Seventy US Dollars (US $ 70.00) for foreign runners.

I just want to let you know that the moment I discovered that my bib number was not there when I went to NBC Tent to claimed it last Thursday on August 13, 2009, somehow I knew that I wouldn’t get it. Specially when I heard that Mesh aka myironshoes didn’t also got her chip during Globe run.

Knowing that my bib number was not there, your guys directed me to go and wait for more than an hour just to write my name in you mac computer and informed me that Kenny Roger will call/text me.

I’ve been waiting your call/text, as you’ve promised, for more than 42hours but nothing…

I ran your race with the claim stub in my pocket, just in case people will ask me if I’m bandit.

How about that?

The picture was taken in Sacobia, Clark when I participated the 20k trail run. I was running alone downhill, passing the aeta’s farm and met Ben of Photovendo. And the rest is history…

As much as I want to have a mountain run in Mt. Pico de Loro (situated in Ternate Cavite), last week end climb was not a mountain run. That was just another mountain climbing. I’ve been to this mountain for 7x and I’m pretty familiar with the trail.

We planned to leave Silang at 1pm, but the rain didn’t stop since morning. I’m already wet just after I step off from my apartment. The whole members met at the Mang Inasal, Pala-pala and we eventually left the place at around 4pm.

It’s fun to climb while raining but you gotta be ready for it, otherwise it will be a disaster for you. Heading to the jump-off station, I didn’t see any worries from their faces. Everybody were so excited to hit the trail and get wet despite the bad weather that afternoon. 11 of us managed to reach the jump-off station accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds. Little did I know that there was a typhoon going on that time somewhere in Mountain Province.

And yes, the moment we got off from the jeepney, we all wet. After final packing and a short of prayer, we hit the trail. I told to the expedition leader that I want to be a sweeper. The first 100m from the jump-off was a challenge. It was a sudden ascend and strong current of water occupied the rocky trail followed by slippery and muddy trail.

Everybody were in high spirit to reach the summit.

Most of my climbs in this mountain were during summer so practically all the rivers that one should passes by to the summit are dry. That night, we faced flash flood and strong current of water in all rivers, however we managed to crossed them all. Just before we crossed the last river, I was left behind together with another buddy. We walked pretty slow because of the load that I carried (25+kg) and the headlamp of my friend wasn’t working and I had a very dim flash light.

Passing the last open field into the jungle, still the rain was unmerciful poured out from the water gate to us accompanied by strong wind. Got into the jungle, another challenges waiting for us. From this point, trail became steeper, slippery, rocky and flooded. Another guy join our group and now three of us left behind. Both of us were carrying a backpack full loaded. The lady was happy with her day pack. Three of us trekking up slowly and had few stops. I was soaking wet but not all with the water from the rain. I was incredibly sweating too!

Knowing that we were departed quite far from the main group, I gave a signal by whistling to wait for us. But it seems they enjoy with their pace. From this moment, I can give a prophecy that something will go wrong because of many reasons. There was only one guy in that big group who had been here once and that was two years ago. I’m pretty sure that the trail was not so familiar to him anymore. The rest are first timer to this mountain and novice climbers. The principle of climbing a mountain is let the experienced climber lead the way or at least be in the group to help in leading the way. Another reason was we came here as a group but we walked individually. Majority of members in the big group brought only day pack which is lighter, only one of them carried a backpack which is also lighter compare to us. Obviously, they could walk faster compare to the rest. The principle in climbing a mountain with a group, slower climber must be in front and control the pace and no long gap between climbers, especially in this weather. Stick together!

As much as I want to sped up just to avoid freezing cold, being a sweeper, left no one behind.

We were united only once and that was after we passed by the open farm into the jungle. My calculation was we were 30minutes separated. From the moment I started conceived the idea that something will happen, I began to think of worst case scenario.

Upon reaching the campsite before the summit at around 7pm, we looked for them but couldn’t found. We asked the fellow climbers if they saw a group of 8 climbers arrived earlier but negative response. I went into the bamboos trees and into the trail to the summit while whistling but no response.

I worried so much. My mind goes back to the search and rescues operations I participated in the past thinking how vulnerable and unlucky they must be *if they are still alive*. My mind recalled on the common accidents in the mountain in related to this situation, hypothermia, fall into the cliff, injury, cramps, etc.

All of us were shivering already. The rain was on and off by now but the wind was extremely strong and foggy. I could see the tents of the other climbers were deformed because of that. There were tents flooded and abandoned.

We decided to set up our tent and it was a 20minutes gruesome tried to pitch it due to rain and strong wind.

While I was trying my best to erect the tent by myself while the other two tried their best to covered the tent with a flysheet, the rain was unceasingly discharged us. When the flysheet of the tent was able to put at the right place, we were saved.

Having established our tent, changed our clothes, we cooked our dinner while thinking and discussing the situation of the rest of our member.

Where could they be?

It was not a good night for me. Although it is always my favorite time to sleep inside the tent, at the summit while rain but I couldn’t sleep well. My mind was keep on thinking of them.

Early in the morning around 5am, I was on my way to the summit although back in my mind I was thinking that it is impossible for them to camped at the summit. And it was true. I went down to the tower just in case they were there but negative. Backed down to the camp site, I asked the Filipino buddy to accompany me to talked to the climbers at the summit. That weekend, the summit was crowded. More than 10 tents were pitched up there. I talked to the them that we got a situation here. I also called their attention to stand by just in case something went wrong with them.

That chilly morning I wore my wet socks and boot again and get ready to tracked down the mountain. I eat two pieces of bread, drink enough, brought a bottle of Gatorade tiger, survival knife, whistle, a webbing and another two ropes (for artificial stretcher), cell phone, and aluminized emergency blanket.

“Every second is life”…

I jogged down from the camp site. I didn’t know if they survived the night and I didn’t have any idea where could be the possible trail/point that they got lost. I also tried to remember the place of our last contact with them. Every five minutes of jogged, I whistled for 3x but no response. Every time I met a junction, I intentionally took the wrong trail or hunter trail and left marks on trees.

During my conversation with the rest of the climbers at the camp site, we had a common presupposition that they got lost on the fork trail where there is a fallen tree just before the summit. From this point, climbers/hikers are expected to reach the summit in about 15minutes time. Unfortunately, many climbers had made a common mistake in that point. Generally, when you are about to reach the summit, the trail becoming steeper. However, when you reach this point, instead of continue going up, you have to take right turn and going down again for about 50meters and follow by a relatively flat trail and a gradual short hill to the camp site.

I know very well this location because I was once got lost here too but managed to tracked down to the fallen tree and got the right trail. When you go straight up from this point, you will walk for about 10minutes, passing through bamboos and very steep rocky trail and you will find the fake summit and it’s a dead end trail. From this point you could see the camp site which is very close and the real summit if not foggy. If you pass this trail during day time, you could easily find that the trail isn’t so clear and have not often used.

When I reached this point, I went up to the fake summit and whistling for several times and at the same time tried to get clear orientation of the surrounding. I knew that the camp site is just somewhere down below but I couldn’t see it, I could not orient my self due to very thick fog and strong winds. I sent text to my fellow climbers in Silang and informed them about the situation and asked them to stand by. I decided to went down again after waiting for about 10minutes and found negative clue about them.

While going down, I met a group of climbers and inquired if they saw 8 climbers. They didn’t. They spent the night at the nipa hut. If my friends decided to tracked back last night after knowing that they got lost, they should have met this climbers. After directing them on how to reach the summit, I jogged down again until I came out of the jungle to the open field with the two signboards of Pico de Loro. From this point, I decided to went back to the camp site again.

I ran back up to the camp site again and keep on whistling.

I was alone, just between me and the jungle…

Unceasing prayers whispered hoping that God will take care of them…

Tired but I have to find them *dead or alive*!

It took me 25minutes from the camp site to this point and another 45minutes to run back up to the fork trail.

Approaching the fork trail again, my whistle was responded. I sprint to the fallen trees and found out that the group I met before got lost too and to my surprise they saw the 8 climbers up near the fake summit inside the bamboo trees. They literally cry out that they got lost and they found the 8 climbers to me. I thank God for them though puzzled thinking that I was there but didn’t found them.

I directed them to the right trail and rushed up to the fake summit. I finally got them having an emergency camp close to the fake summit. They were all smiles and about to eat their breakfast. What a sweet reunion!

That was an experience!

*breaking up my tent, I discovered that one of the ropes to fasten the flysheet was cut off by a dull object: DISASTER!*

*garbage in Mt. Pico de Loro is still an issue: DISASTER!*

*vandalism is still as strong as the wind at the summit: DISASTER!*

Will be back to this beloved mountain and put up a reflective signboard at the fork trail near the summit.

To begin with, let me start with the fact that my last race I participated was The North Face 20k Trail Run last May 24, 2008 and between that period to this time, I’d ran only once, that was mountain run in Mt. Batulao three Sundays ago. Since last Sunday to Friday, I got knocked down in the bed due to fever, coughing and headache. However, last two weeks ago, I was so brave to register for half marathon for Run For Home this morning.

On the way to Manila from Silang this early morning, I was calculating if I force myself to run the distance. Will I finish it? Will I survive or DNF. But DNF in half marathon is really embarasshing for me. But I don’t run anymore, I got sick too… Will the Gus Roxtane I have could take me to the finish line?

grrrr…….

I arrived at the starting area a minute before the gun start of 21k runners. I haven’t change my clothes and I haven’t deposite my bag in baggage area and “10…9…8…2…1…GO!”

Few minutes later I found myself at the starting line for 10k, still nervous and anxious…

It was in this moments I feel home. To see runners from different folks of life, mix together at the starting line.

I was still coughing while running but I’ve made it to the finish line together with Kevin and Dess.

Some of the veteran of Bataan Death March Ultra Marathon last year confess that we’ve been away from the actual training and miles for sometimes. Not only that, our speed became a problem. And that exactly how I experience. But this morning, I’ve gained back my momentum in running. I hope to get back to my routine very soon.
